I’ve learnt that my symptoms involve neuro-immune-endocrine-autonomic dysregulation, including:
- Chronic, debilitating fatigue, cognitive impairment, and emotional blunting
- Severe chemical and food intolerances with systemic reactions
- Persistent skin and inflammatory reactions resistant to standard treatment
- Immune dysregulation with hypersensitivities and systemic symptom amplification
- Autonomic instability, including air hunger, palpitations, exercise intolerance, inability to eat, sexual dysfunction, abnormal stress response and suspected small fibre neuropathy
- Endocrine disruption, including suspected adrenal insufficiency and markedly altered response to medications
- Marked disability, with constant functional impairment and reliance on exogenous treatments (steroids, stimulants, benzodiazepines, pain medications) to just barely physically and psychologically cope from a bed/house bound state
These systems fail together, not independently, producing a pattern of medication response inversion, autonomic collapse, and central neurochemical dysfunction that is not compatible with primary psychiatric disease.
A key observation in my clinical course is that systemic corticosteroids profoundly modulated my symptoms, initially producing marked and unprecedented improvement in energy, drive, and functional capacity. With continued exposure, however, this was followed by a clear deterioration in autonomic and central nervous system function, and since corticosteroid treatment my baseline level of function has remained significantly worse than prior.
Prior to corticosteroid exposure, stimulants were effective at very low doses. Following prednisone use, there was an abrupt requirement for 4–8× higher doses despite minimal prior exposure or opportunity for tolerance, with reduced efficacy even at higher doses. Importantly, this loss of medication responsiveness occurred without tolerance-building exposure and extends across multiple pharmacologic classes, including stimulants, opioids, sedatives, and hormones. This cross-class pattern is consistent with pathological receptor-signalling disruption and central neurochemical dysfunction rather than dependence or misuse.
These findings strongly support an underlying inflammatory and neuro-immune mechanism. Prolonged corticosteroid exposure also resulted in significant secondary complications, including myopathy, bone loss, adrenal suppression, neuropsychiatric destabilization, and neurochemical dysregulation. Ongoing management has been largely self-directed due to the absence of appropriate medical care.
Taken together, this pattern constitutes evidence of immune-mediated central nervous system dysfunction followed by iatrogenic injury. The initial response reflects reversible suppression of pathological neuro-immune signalling, whereas the subsequent deterioration reflects corticosteroid-induced destabilization of autonomic regulation, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis integrity, muscle metabolism, bone density, and central neurochemical homeostasis.
